The Volvo 850 T5-R is among the rarest cars in the UK, with only about 60 saloons and estates surviving from an original production run of 200. Neil Cotty’s 1995 Cream Yellow model is particularly scarce, as that shade was in high demand but produced in limited numbers. Cotty, who has connections to motorsport, has owned the estate for roughly seven years, having acquired it from a friend who operates a car dealership.
Locating a T5-R estate with a manual transmission in yellow proved difficult. The car’s origins lie in Volvo’s 2.3-liter five-cylinder, 20-valve engine, which originally generated 237 horsepower. Porsche contributed to the engine and transmission development, while Volvo concentrated on aerodynamics, adding a front lip bumper, rear spoiler, and side skirts. Though the saloon version was visually striking, the estate stood out for its practicality—including roof rails that bordered on the whimsical.
Interest in the model grew after Volvo and Tom Walkinshaw Racing campaigned an 850 estate in the British Touring Car Championship the previous year. Cotty’s enthusiasm for racing extends to his family; his 16-year-old daughter, Emily, competes in the Italian Formula 4 Championship.

Cotty’s Mazda RX-7 Spirit R, another rare classic, also resides in his garage. Initially, driving the Volvo disappointed him. “It felt soft,” he admits.
Modifications addressed those issues. Cotty upgraded the induction system and tuned the engine, increasing output to 350 horsepower. Stiffer anti-roll bars and bushings improved handling. Whether the car remains in his collection depends on racing expenses.
