The 2022 GMC Sierra AT4X and Denali Ultimate offer a choice of high-tech luxury or genuine off-road ability and an impressive list of standard features. The Sierra’s new face features refreshed grilles and bumpers, updated LED headlights, and sequential daytime running lights on some trims.
Interior Updates
GM’s truck interiors have had their fair share of criticism in the past, but for 2022, all Sierra models received a makeover with interiors that finally put them on level footing against all rivals. The new Ultimate trim features a leather-wrapped wheel and door panels, open-pore wood trim, and 16-way power adjustable front seats with massage.
The AT4X boasts a well-appointed cabin with massaging seats, a trick camera-view rear mirror, tons of interior cubby space, wireless phone charger, wifi hotspot, and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google assistant. The Google interface is really slick, with an attractive, uncluttered “desktop” and simple “pinch and drag” functions familiar to any tablet or smartphone user.
Technology and Performance
The Denali Ultimate offers a 6.2L V8 engine with 420hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The AT4X features the same engine and transmission.

Off-Road Capabilities
The AT4X isn’t a rock-bashing, desert runner like the Ford Raptor or Ram TRX, but straddles the line between full-on purpose-built trail machine and regular hauler quite nicely. It features the same two-inch lift as the AT4, but the springs have been re-engineered to provide an extra two inches of wheel travel up front, and an extra inch in the rear.
Approach angle is 25.5 degrees, and departure angle is 22.7. Conveniently, an enormous gravel pit is provided to switch to Off Road mode and experience the AT4X’s capabilities in deep sand, steep uphill gravels, rock trails, and some dramatically off-camber moguls.
