Lexus NX reaches 50,000 sales in Australia

In August, the automaker celebrated the delivery of its 50,000th NX medium SUV to a buyer in Sydney, marking a rare sales landmark for the brand in the country.

Milestone delivery shows long‑term appeal

First launched locally in 2014, the model quickly rose to become the top‑selling vehicle for the company and has held that position every year since. Over one million units have been sold worldwide, showing its broad appeal beyond the domestic market.

“Few models have shaped the Lexus story in Australia quite like the NX, and we are delighted to celebrate the fact that 50,000 customers have now chosen it,” said Jack Hobbs, chief executive. “This achievement reflects the strong affinity Australian customers have for the NX and its ability to bring together craftsmanship, comfort, performance, and efficiency in a way that enriches everyday life. For many Australians, the NX has been their first Lexus, helping introduce a new generation of customers to the Lexus ownership experience.”

Hobbs also emphasized that the NX often serves as the entry point for Australians discovering the Lexus brand. By delivering a first‑time ownership experience that combines traditional luxury cues with contemporary technology, the model has helped broaden the marque’s appeal and attract a younger, more diverse clientele.

Electrification and future plans

The plug‑in hybrid version, the NX 450h+, was the specific unit handed over in the recent delivery. That powertrain represents the first locally sold plug‑in hybrid for the brand and serves as the flagship of the current range.

The vehicle’s hybrid and turbo‑petrol options have helped the company build a two‑decade electrification record, now spanning 20 years. As luxury buyers in the country shift toward low‑emission models, the model’s role in that transition has grown.

By integrating a plug‑in hybrid drivetrain into the second‑generation NX, Lexus demonstrated a clear commitment to expanding its electrified portfolio. The move signaled that the brand was ready to meet evolving emissions standards while preserving the driving trends that luxury customers expect.

Looking ahead, the next generation is slated to arrive in 2027. Details on specifications, pricing and exact launch timing have not been released, but the company indicated the upcoming version will continue the focus on efficiency and premium feel.

For newcomers, the significance lies in how a single model can act as a gateway to the brand’s broader portfolio. By offering an entry point that blends traditional luxury cues with modern powertrains, it helps expand the customer base and accelerates the shift toward greener options.

Jack Hobbs added that the NX’s ability to combine craftsmanship, comfort, performance and efficiency has become a defining attribute of the Lexus experience in Australia. This blend not only satisfies current owners but also creates a compelling narrative for prospective buyers seeking a vehicle that aligns with both lifestyle aspirations and environmental responsibility.

The brand’s electrification journey, now spanning two decades, has been anchored by the NX’s evolution from conventional hybrid and turbo‑petrol variants to the current plug‑in hybrid flagship. This progression illustrates how a single model can drive a broader strategic shift, encouraging the entire Lexus range to adopt more sustainable technologies.
