The strategic cooperation agreement deepens the collaboration between FAW Corporation Limited and Guangzhou Automobile Group Company Ltd.

Chinese state-owned automaker FAW Corporation Limited and Guangzhou Automobile Group Company Ltd have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to deepen their collaboration, according to Toyota Motor Corporation. The deal involves transferring FAW’s 50% shareholding in FAW Toyota Motor Company Ltd to GAC, with GAC issuing new shares to FAW. This transaction makes FAW the second-largest shareholder in GAC, while GAC becomes the primary partner in both of Toyota’s main Chinese joint ventures, including the existing GAC Toyota Motor Company.

Operational Changes for Toyota’s Chinese Operations

The new structure will not alter Toyota’s 50% ownership in either joint venture. However, the companies will establish an alliance to handle R&D, procurement, production, and sales functions. Toyota stated that this move aims to simplify operations between the two ventures and strengthen their business foundations. By combining these operational areas, the alliance is designed to facilitate better collaboration regarding product development, technology transfer, and business strategy, ensuring a more streamlined approach to the Chinese market.

Both FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota will continue to operate as independent legal entities. Toyota emphasized that the alliance will promote sustainable development and enhance competitiveness through improved collaboration. Under this framework, the three companies plan to use their respective strengths to support improvements in competitiveness and accelerate the development of electrification and intelligence at both joint ventures. The goal is for the joint ventures to strive to be the “best in town” and provide more competitive products and high-quality services to bring smiles to the faces of customers.

Historic Scale of Toyota’s Chinese Ventures

These joint ventures, established in the early 2000s, cover distinct regions of China and sold approximately 750,000 vehicles in the first eight months of 2026. Since their inception, the two companies have sold 23 million vehicles to Chinese customers combined. The source notes that historically, the two joint ventures covered different areas of China in terms of dealer networks, but the new alliance framework allows for an efficient alliance of industrial resources across regions.
