Vision BMW Alpina Unveils Futuristic Luxury Car

BMW Group faces a growing challenge: the ultra-wealthy are expanding, and the gap between its priciest models and competitors like Rolls-Royce is widening. To address this, the company is repositioning Alpina, a brand it acquired in 2020, to target buyers willing to spend up to $200,000 on a luxury vehicle. The Vision BMW Alpina concept, unveiled as part of this strategy, blends Alpina’s heritage with BMW’s engineering, aiming to redefine what a high-end grand touring car can be.

The concept car revives Alpina’s signature “shark nose” design, a bold front-end treatment first seen on the B7 Coupe of the 1970s. This aggressive stance is now integrated with BMW’s kidney grille, transformed into a three-dimensional sculptural element. The front bumper features elliptical quad exhaust outlets, a nod to Alpina’s traditional cues, while the 20-spoke wheels—22 inches up front and 23 inches in the rear—echo the brand’s legacy of performance-oriented styling.

Details are intentionally understated. Alpina’s deco-lines, the brand’s iconic pinstripes, are now painted beneath the clear coat for a cleaner look. Dark metallic finishes on recessed surfaces and hidden lighting elements reinforce BMW’s “Second Read” philosophy: details that reveal themselves gradually rather than demand immediate attention. The rear of the car includes a powered mechanism that deploys a glass water bottle and crystal drinking glasses, each adorned with 20 deco-lines and a six-degree rim—a subtle tribute to the brand’s Alpine roots.

Inside, the Vision BMW Alpina continues the restrained approach. A six-degree visual line divides the cabin horizontally, separating darker upper surfaces from lighter lower sections. Full-grain leather, sourced from Alpine-region suppliers, covers much of the interior, paired with machined metal trim and crystal switchgear for primary controls. The rear compartment is designed for long-distance comfort, with concealed lighting and magnetic holders securing glassware in place.

Technology centers around BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, featuring a dedicated Alpina-specific user interface. Blue and green accent graphics become more prominent as the driver cycles through drive modes, from Comfort+ to Speed. The system displays landscape imagery inspired by the Alpine views near Buchloe, Germany, Alpina’s longtime home. This focus on comfort aligns with the philosophy of Alpina’s late founder, Burkard Bovensiepen, who believed that a relaxed driver is a faster one—principles still embedded in the concept’s Comfort+ calibration.

The first production model under the new structure will be based on the BMW 7 Series platform, arriving in 2024. BMW Group representatives emphasize that the car will balance Alpina’s heritage with modern luxury, targeting buyers who value both performance and refinement. Whether this sleek, super-cruising saloon can capture that market remains to be seen, but the Vision BMW Alpina sets a clear direction for the brand’s next chapter.
